Joseph Bonnell
(They/He)
I am a psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and educator. I believe that it is impossible to separate a person’s environment and societal structures from mental health, and my approach to therapy reflects this reality. My approach to counseling incorporates elements of disability affirming, narrative, feminist, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and cognitive behavioral techniques.
I have a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, and additionally a Certificate in Addictions Counseling, all from Portland State University. I completed my undergraduate degree at The Evergreen State College, with an emphasis on gender and ethnic studies. My additional education includes training in DBT, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), LGBTQ issues, and working with trauma survivors.
For the last 20 years, I have worked in social service and social justice organizations, both before and after becoming a therapist, primarily with queer, trans, houseless, and disabled people. Most of my experience as a therapist has centered on providing care to people who have experienced exclusion from the mental health system. My past counseling work includes supervising an integrated behavioral health program, working on a DBT team, providing trauma focused therapy, working with people experiencing psychosis and doing harm reduction-based substance abuse counseling. I also provide clinical supervision for LPC associates and substance use disorder counseling certifications (ex. CADC).
